As branch president, I organize events from small stands at public gatherings to 60-person dinner fundraisers in order to raise both money and awareness. I’ve learned how to encourage my peers to meet deadlines, to work around 30 different schedules at once, and to give presentations convincing people why my organization is worth their donation. But overall, ADPP has taught me that small changes can have immense impacts. My branch has helped raise almost $3,000 to build water sanitation plants, construct medical clinics, and develop health education programs in the small village of Zwedru. The most important moment occurred during the night’s luminaria ceremony, during which cancer patients of the past and present were commemorated. Our whole team gathered around, and I asked people to share how they have been affected by cancer. The Sonora Eagles were my means for dealing with the death of my loved ones to cancer. I was never fully aware of how closely humans rely upon each other until I read The Fall of Freddy the Leaf by Leo Buscaglia in freshman year. The difference between ADPP and most other organizations is its emphasis on the basics and making changes that last. Working towards those changes to solve real life problems is what excites me. So, I will forgive and forget, love and inspire, experience and satire, laugh and cry, accomplish and fail, live and die. This is how I want to live my life, with this optimistic attitude that every day is a second chance. All the time, we have the opportunity to renew our perspective on life, to correct our mistakes, and to simply move on. The allegory is about a leaf that changes with the seasons, finally dying in the winter, realizing that his purpose was to help the tree thrive. After reading it, I was enlightened on the cycle of life and realized the tremendous impact my actions had on others. The exploration led me to the African Disease Prevention Project , a non-profit organization associated with several universities. I decided to create the first high school branch of the organization; I liked its unique way of approaching health and social issues. On this first day of senior year, I set out upon my task. I procure an ordinary plastic grocery bag from my backpack. The contents inside collectively represent everything about me in high school â€" they tell a story, one all about me. Each one of us leaves find a legacy as we for fill our purpose in life. My fingers know instinctively, without a thought. They turn the dial, just as they have hundreds of times before, until a soft, metallic click echoes into my eardrum and triggers their unconscious stop. I exultantly thrust open my locker door, exposing its deepest bowels candidly to the wide halls of the high school. The bright lights shine back, brashly revealing every crevice, nook, and cranny, gleaming across its scintillating, bare surfaces. Several of my family members left this world in one last beating symphony; heart attacks seem to be a trend in my family. They left like birds; laughing one minute and in a better place the next. Using equipment that a high school student could only dream of using, I was able to map apoptosis versus necrosis in HeLa cells, a cervical cancer line, after treating them with curcumin-bound nanoparticles. Using flow cytometry to excite each individually suspended cell with a laser, the scattered light from the cells helped to determine which cells were living, had died from apoptosis or had died from necrosis. Like the phoenix I will continue to rise from the ashes, experienced and renewed. I will not waste time for my life is already in flux. Yet I've realized that life is fickler than I had imagined; it can disappear or change at any time. Using this collected data, it was possible to determine if the curcumin and/or the nanoparticles had played any significant role on the cervical cancer cells. Later, I was able to image cells in 4D through con-focal microscopy. From growing HeLa cells to trying to kill them with different compounds, I was able to gain the hands-on experience necessary for me to realize once again why I love science. I believe my purpose as a student is to encourage others to become active community members and motivate them to reach new heights. The Sonora Eagles were students of different grade levels, ethnicities, socioeconomic backgrounds, and educational ability. We joked and played football while volunteering.

College Essay Consultant

College Essay Consultant Imagine that each different part of you is a bead and that a select few will show up in your essay. They’re not the kind of beads you’d find on a store-bought bracelet; they’re more like the hand-painted beads on a bracelet your little brother made for you. I learned how to fix a bike, how to swim, and even how to talk to girls. I became resourceful, fixing shoes with strips of duct tape, and I even found a job to help pay bills. I became as independent as I could to lessen the time and money mom had to spend raising me. I know I am being idealistic and young, and that my philosophy on life is comparable to a calculus limit; I will never reach it. But I won't give up on it because, I can still get infinitely close and that is amazing. Don't reuse an answer to a similar question from another application. Anyone can write about how they won the big game or the summer they spent in Rome. When recalling these events, you need to give more than the play-by-play or itinerary. First, the author brainstormed the content of his essay using the Feelings and Needs Exercise. Without a father figure to teach me the things a father could, I became my own teacher. But our prosperity was short-lived as my step dad’s chronic alcoholism became more and more recurrent. When I was eight, my younger brother Fernando’s birth complicated things even further. As my step-dad slipped away, my mom continued working, and Fernando’s care was left to Jose and me. I cooked, Jose cleaned, I dressed Fernando, Jose put him to bed. This is a great way to figure out the “bones” (i.e. structure) of your essay. Describe what you learned from the experience and how it changed you. It could be an experience, a person, a bookâ€"anything that has had an impact on your life. Each of the values creates an island of your personality and a paragraph for your essay. Share all your brainstorming content with them and ask them to mirror back to you what they’re seeing. It can be helpful if they use using reflective language and ask lots of questions. I am a diehard Duke basketball fan, and I can identify all of the Duke basketball fans at my high school on one hand. I’ve gotten different Myers-Briggs personality types every time I took the test. An example of a reflective observation is “I’m hearing that ‘building’ has been pretty important in your life… is that right? ” You’re hunting together for a thematic thread--something that might connect different parts of your life and self. And, as I write these things down, I notice a theme of youth/old age emerging. Note that I couldn’t come up with something for the last one, “knowledge,” which is fine. Read her essay below, then I’ll share more about how you can find your own thematic thread. As with the Type A essay, complete the brainstorming exercises described at the start of this chapter. No matter which structure you choose, these exercises help. Take special care to complete the Feelings and Needs Exercise, as it can be a powerful essay-outlining tool. Next, the author used the Narrative Structure to give shape to his essay. I became a pescatarian this year to avoid fried chicken, and I can honestly get a life’s worth of meat out of cod, salmon, tilapia, shrimp, you name it. The theme of your essay is the thread that connects your beads. Living without a father meant money was tight, mom worked two jobs, and my brother and I took care of each other when she worked. For a brief period of time the quality of our lives slowly started to improve as our soon-to-be step-dad became an integral part of our family. He paid attention to the needs of my mom, my brother, and me.

The Five Parts Of The College Paragraph

The Five Parts Of The College Paragraph We also administer the Advanced Placement program, which helps students earn credit for college-level work they do while in high school. We know these tools to be useful, but we also see how they can contribute to the arms race. The College Board can and will do more to limit the excessesâ€"more on that belowâ€"but there is more at stake than which tests kids take or don’t take. Instead, they’re high school students who need help writing their college application essay. College Essay Guy -Your go-to resource for practical, step-by-step guides on writing beautiful college essays and putting together an awesome college application. There is no way to determine a typical scenario regarding a college’s method for reviewing applications. In all cases at least one admissions officer will look at your essay. Students can take more AP if they want, but not to get into college. As the CEO of the College Board, I see this arms race up close. We administer the SAT, a test that helps admissions officers assess the reading, writing, and math skills of students across the country and around the world. While data show that taking up to five AP classes over the course of high school helps students succeed in college, there is no evidence that more than that is better. We therefore recently announced that taking more than five AP courses should provide no advantage in admissions. With increased competition for admission, the essay has become an important factor in consideration of your admissibility to a school. So if a school requires an essay it is VERY likely to be read. If a school has a writing section in their supplement to the Common Application you can rest assured that ALL of that writing is evaluated by admissions officers. Do your best and assume that it WILL be read and that it WILL have a bearing on your admission chances. If a school uses an admissions committee the number could jump to three or more. In any case, what YOU can control is how well your essay describes who you are and gives the admissions person a chance to see things in you that will be an asset to the school. Students’ pass out of school and start planning to choose the subject stream and best college to pursue that stream. Colleges will see if you just read the first paragraph of a webpage or if you really looked. When citing a desire to participate in a certain club or program, make sure you can actually participate in it. For example, don’t write about wanting to be part of a program only for grad students; save this for your graduate school application. Our goal is simple; to help students reach their full potential. Academic college essay writing is not for everyone and shouldn 't be a reason why a student drops out. Get The Paper Experts on your side and get us helping you finish what you started. Advanced Placement can help students discover and pursue a passion, but not if too many courses suffocate their time. Some students cram their schedules with AP courses to burnish their applications. Discover who you are and what matters to you while having fun at the same time. I’m going to switch gears a bit in today’s posting and give my in-depth analysis of SAT-II problems a breather. Instead, I will be talking about college admissions essays, and sharing with you some ways to help maintain perspective during the writing process. At first blush, the college admissions essay seems a very particular piece of writingâ€"it is a hybrid form of personal narrative, argumentative prose, epic poem, and impassioned plea. If you’re asked to write why you want to attend a certain college or program, do your research. Our writers are experienced and possess at least an MA in their area of specialty. Our subject list is long and runs from anthropology to zoology and every subject in between. Our writers have earned degrees in different disciplines such as MAs, MBAs, MScs, PhDs. So basically admission or essay application does not assign on a subject topic; it is either based on personal selection or might be given item to choose by the students. There is as such no specified vertical, but students in search for the help choose the one who can help them out in a subject they are going to pursue.

On Writing The College Application Essay, 25th Anniversary Edition

On Writing The College Application Essay, 25th Anniversary Edition I was the king of bowling, and Dawn was the queen of tennis. I don’t remember a single time that they argued about the games.Afterward, we would gather in the living room and Danielle would play the piano while the rest of us sang hymns. Of course, those 28 months were too short to fully understand all five families, but I learned from and was shaped by each of them. I don’t remember a single time that they argued about the games. Afterward, we would gather in the living room and Danielle would play the piano while the rest of us sang hymns. It would be fair to say that this was all due to Shellie’s upbringing. My room was on the first floor, right in front of Shellie’s hair salon, a small business that she ran out of her home. In the living room were six or seven huge amplifiers and a gigantic chandelier hung from the high ceiling. I’ve spent most of my life as an anti-vegetable carboholic. For years, processed snack foods ruled the kitchen kingdom of my household and animal products outnumbered plant-based offerings. The Dirksen family had three kids. They were all different. Danielle liked bitter black coffee, Christian liked energy drinks, and Becca liked sweet lemon tea. Finally, I am a strong proponent of hands-on experience for learning what good food looks and tastes like, so cooking is one of my favorite ways to teach the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle. Our society has taught us that delicious food has to make us feel guilty, when that is simply not the case. The best feeling in the world is falling in love with a dish and then learning all the health benefits that it provides the body. My transformation began with my mom’s cancer diagnosis. My mom went on a 100% whole food plant-based diet. She had recently delivered a baby, so she was still in the hospital when I moved into their house. The Martinez family did almost everything together. Within two months I was calling them mom and dad. At first, the non-stop visits from strangers made me nervous, but soon I got used to them. I remember one night, a couple barged into my room while I was sleeping. My second family was the Martinez family, who were friends of the Watkins’s. The host dad Michael was a high school English teacher and the host mom Jennifer (who had me call her “Jen”) taught elementary school. The host mom Shellie was a single mom who had two of her own sons and two Russian daughters that she had adopted. The kids always had something warm to eat, and were always on their best behavior at home and in school. I fully embraced this new eating philosophy to show my support. Eager to figure out the whole “vegan” thing, the two of us started binge-watching health documentaries such as “What the Health” and “Forks Over Knives”. We read all the books by the featured doctors like “The China Study” and “How Not To Die”. I became entranced by the world of nutritional science and how certain foods could help prevent cancer or boost metabolism. Dawn, the host mom didn’t like winter, and Mark, the host dad, didn’t like summer. After dinner, we would all play Wii Sports together. When he reveals each lesson at the end, one after the other, we sense how all these seemingly random events are connected. We realize this writer has been carefully constructing this piece all along; we see the underlying structure.

Can I Use The Same Essay For More Than One Application?

Can I Use The Same Essay For More Than One Application? Her skill at those procedures seems to make the point that nurses who excel at their profession are as skilled as doctors in some ways. However, later in the episode, when a mother 's young child dies, Carol insists on giving the parent time with the child to grieve, rather than moving her out of the room to make way for incoming patients. Dr. Weaver snaps at Carol, telling her that if she is going to go to medical school, she has to stop thinking like a nurse. The implication in Dr. Weaver 's criticism is clear. Hospitals divide the labor of caring for sick people among the professions, but because the professions are still dominated by certain genders, the division ends up being one of gender more than job title. Although we like to think of the medical profession as increasingly egalitarian, gender divides still run through it. The process by which doctors are socialized into how to be a doctor comes largely through the mentoring process of medical school. Vocational training within the applied sciences tends to be much more about apprenticeship than about theoretical knowledge. When Carol Hathaway, a long time ER nurse, decides to go back to med school and become a doctor, the MDs in the ER treat her very differently. Dr. Kerry Weaver asks her to perform procedures as if she were already a med student. While Carol is uncomfortable with this, she does perform well. This is because more selective schools often have more qualified applicants, so essays are used kind of as a tie-breaker. The essay is always important, but just how much it will influence your overall application varies by the school to which you are applying, as well as your individual profile. You may have to adjust how you convey those thoughts based on the length. Your essay should always have a beginning, middle, and end. Another scholarship essay length you may encounter is 1,000 words. Nurses worry about the feelings of people, while doctors worry about seeing the next patient or about developing enough distance emotionally so that they can move quickly from one medical crisis to another. Nurses, a profession dominated by women, are the ones who are supposed to soothe over any hurts caused by a too abrupt or too uncaring doctor. My own experiences with hospitals as well as the experiences of friends of mine seem unanimous on this. With a 1,000-word scholarship essay, you will need to cite sources and provide detailed references to support your claims. 1,000+ word essay prompts are often used for writing competitions, where you may be asked to create a fictional story. Yet still, confirm that cell phone use policies should be enforced. If our thesis was that cell phones should NOT be controlled in college, we would explain the dangers of not having access to cell phones. You should approach all essays with the same mentality, regardless of their length. Your goal is to compose a piece that clearly guides the reader through your thoughts and reasoning. Instead of just having her do the kind of grunt work nurses usually get stuck with, they have her do some of the procedures that the med students usually do. Carol looks uncomfortable with this, but she does well. However, students are more concerned when they can 't get their paragraphs to be even a third of a page long. They usually think this is because they simply have nothing more to say, which in argumentative writing is not usually the case. Nurses were great, and if you were lucky you got a doctor with a decent bedside manner. But for the most part, the professionals who really looked after loved ones were nurses. Part of this is likely the result of the different roles nurses and doctors play within the hierarchy of the hospital. When Carol Hathway announces to the staff of the Cook County ER that she wants to be a doctor, the doctors on staff begin treating her differently. Usually the inability to get paragraphs to be long enough is the result of writing paragraphs that are missing key components. We’re giving away a $1,000 scholarship to affected college students. All you need to do is submit a proof of your enrollment. Notice how our conclusion was definitive but optimistic. We explain that colleges need to adapt their rules to fit the needs of their students.

Tips For Writing Your College Application Essay

Tips For Writing Your College Application Essay This will take away all the variations and help ensure your writing assignment meets expectations. If it’s for something informal and you simply need a general guideline, you can find it below. For those who need a general rule of thumb, a typical page which has 1-inch margins and is typed in 12 point font with standard spacing elements will be approximately 500 words when typed single spaced. People use estimates all the time to help them. For those who are looking for a basic rough idea, this is helpful. Whether you’re helping readers find resources for living off the land or paying markets for poetry, a short but well-researched nonfiction ebook could be just what they need. Are enough people curious about the subject to justify writing a book about it? Try Googling phrases like “killer shoes” or “toxic food additives” â€" or something else that jumps to mind. Whatever it is that makes you want to crawl out of your own skin, write about it. For example, if the assignment says the writing should be in 10-point font, it’s going to take a greater number of words to fill a page than if the assignment requires a 12-point font. Take a look through your own library, too, to see if the books you already have given you some ideas for books you’d love to write. It’s not that you think everyone should be like you; you just want more people to benefit from the same things that have made your life richer and more fun. When you choose a travel niche for your books, you will have endless fun things to write about and share your amazing experiences with other eager travelers. I only need to write 250 words and you don’t have how many pages that is on your list. If you are given a writing assignment with a page number, the best thing to do is go directly to the person who made the assignment and ask for a word count. Once you look beyond the easy takeaways, the implied challenge to make a change is harder to ignore. A hybrid of how to and self-help, this book aims to help your readers improve their lives in some measurable way. The information for a book like this is likely to be time-sensitive, so if you’re looking for a nonfiction book idea that will still be useful five years from now, this may not be the best option. For assignments that require double spacing, it would take approximately 250 words to fill the page. Again, the type of font used can make the word count higher or lower, but it’s a good rule of thumb for those who are simply looking for a general estimation. The truth is there is no definitive answer to this question. The number of words it will take to fill a page will depend on a number of factors including the type of font used, the font size, spacing elements, the margins used on the paper, the paragraph length, etc. Personal and inspiring stories make for great stuff to write about. If you’ve learned a lesson that changed everything for you, write about that. You can also use it to play with the ideas and writing prompts listed below. This could be a reaction to the status quo or to a decision made by your country’s government. It could be about your dissatisfaction with your own life or with the use you’ve made so far of your gifts. If you’ve been through a difficult change, and you’ve helped others get through the same ordeals, you may want to write a book about that process. It doesn’t have to be about consumer products, though. You could also write a book about how to choose the best job, the best neighborhood, or the best education for your kids. This is where you might check out ConsumerReports.com or buy a few computer mags to read up on the best machines out there â€" even for frugal folks. But this could also be a good idea for a nonfiction ebook. Your job is to explain the two options your reader faces and to do so in a way that makes the more challenging option sound better. It’s a step-by-step call to action as well as a chance to go deeper on writing topics most people only skim.

Admissions Finally, have two other readers check it as well. Oftentimes a fresh set of eyes will catch an issue you've glossed over simply because you've been looking at the essay for so long. Give your readers instructions to only look for typos and errors, since you don't want to be making any major content changes at this point in the process. A good way to check for weirdness in language is to read the essay out loud. If something sounds weird when you say it, it will almost certainly seem off when someone else reads it. Start your essay keeping in mind the main focus and shape your essay around it. Is it explicitly stating what the application demanded? There’s only one you out there and that’s who we want to learn more about. Start your essay in the most interesting way possible. Essays with topics related to essay prompt work best. To make your application get accepted, they put all their heart and soul to keep the essay specific and focused on your personality. The admission officer and the committee want to meet you before actually seeing you. The essay is the source through which you tell everything about yourself. The last thing you want is for an admissions officer to be put off by a typo or error. If a student comes from an ethnic background, they could write about their heritage and how that has transformed them into the person they are today. This student may have an entrepreneurial spirit, starting a business, new organization, or event at school like a slam poetry night or an IT group. Maybe your student is fascinated with a topic, talks endlessly about it, and has a solution to a problem that he/she wants to achieve while in college like a public transportation problem. Initial details will bore your audience and they will definitely lose interest in reading your entire essay. The best way of doing it is to start the essay from the middle of the story. It could be an anecdote, life event, incident, or just a life experience. For example, a student’s story could even focus on athletics, which isn’t usually a recommended essay topic unless an athlete went through transformation. Is there a time when a student has struggled, only to reboot, conquer, and win the situation? Not what your college consultant has to say, not what your mom wants you to write, and not what you think we want to hear. Be genuine to your own voice and to your own experiences.
